5 Predator: Killer of Killers

While I can't necessarily count myself as a fan of the Predator franchise that started in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger, when the trailer for this animated installment dropped a few months ago, I was gobsmacked by the stunning animation and gorgeous worlds, and instantly wanted to see it. The Dan Trachtenberg-helmed compilation film consists of three separate-but-interconnected tales of fierce encounters with the galaxy-hopping hunters as they gallivant through human history in search of its worthiest warriors.
Predator: Killer of Killers weaves its way through Viking-era Scandinavia, where raider leader Ursa and her son are ambushed by one of the fanged creatures. Next stop is feudal Japan, where warring samurai brothers Kenji and Kiyoshi are forced to join forces to battle another of the ugly visitors. Jumping forward a few centuries, we find American World War II pilot John Torres, who manages to survive an attack from a Predator-manned starship.
But it doesn't end there, as the three time-spanning victors then find themselves somehow transported to some kind of alien gladiator arena for the final bout, where they must kill or be killed.

4 Edge of Tomorrow
Release Year |
2014 |

Runtime |
1 hour 53 minutes |
In true form of the "Groundhog Day" / time-loop genre of films, I've seen Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow over and over and over again. Now that it's on Hulu, you should, too. Cruise is excellently Cruise-y as Major William Cage, a softened military PR specialist who somehow finds himself storming the beach in a mech suit on the front lines of a dystopian war against an alien species called Mimics. On the battlefield, Cage is killed almost immediately, but wakes up only to start re-living the same day—live, die, repeat.
The only one who can help Cage is the legendary war hero Rita Vrataski (Blunt), a.k.a. the Angel of Verdun, who once held the same resetting power as Cage, but lost it. Just as Groundhog Day's weatherman Phil (Bill Murray) does, Cage learns to master the day, and with the help of Rita, the pair must find a way to use it to win the war.

3 Palm Springs
Release Year |
2020 |
---|---|
Runtime |
1 hour 30 minutes |
I thought about not adding a second time-loop movie to this list, but Palm Springs is just too good to omit. Trading alien invaders for bridesmaids, this Hulu original romantic comedy stars Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg and The Penguin's Cristin Milioti as Nyles and Sarah, two singles who meet at a wedding. Sarah's a cynical maid of honor who just wants to get out of there, while carefree Nyles seems to be having way too much fun—almost as though he knows something Sarah doesn't. Turns out he does, because he's been living in the same wedding day for what seems like an eternity. But things change when the pair fall for each other and Sarah gets sucked into the loop, too.
Palm Springs adds a fun and quirky sci-fi spin on the traditional rom-com, but it's still got heart and emotional depth, which garnered it critical praise when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020.

2 The Royal Tenenbaums
Release Year |
2001 |
---|---|
Runtime |
1 hour 50 minutes |
If you haven't delved into writer/director Wes Anderson's body of whimsical and uniquely stylized work, his third feature film, The Royal Tenenbaums, is as good a place as any to start. Using his offbeat brand of humor (and an excellent soundtrack), Anderson explores themes of family dysfunction and redemption through the eyes of the estranged Tenenbaum patriarch, Royal (Gene Hackman). The eccentric dad fakes a terminal illness as a way to reconnect with his family, most of all his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston).
Inspiring some of the best Halloween costumes ever, Royal's prodigious, emotionally-scarred children consist of the red Adidas tracksuit-clad widower Chas (Ben Stiller) and his doppelgänger sons; Pulitzer-winning adopted daughter Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow); and former tennis star Richie (Luke Wilson), who's in love with Margot. Each of the Tenenbaum kids is needy and desperate in their own weird way, and when the family reunites in New York, their traumas and issues are all confronted.
1 A Complete Unknown

Based on Elijah Wald's 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties, A Complete Unknown is James Mangold and star Timotheé Chalomet's love letter to The Bard himself, Bob Dylan. The Oscar-nominated biopic follows the legendary musician as he arrives on the Greenwich Village folk scene in 1961, and ends with his infamous performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival where he "goes electric."
Along the way, Mangold paints us a gorgeous, fly-on-the wall view of Dylan's career and relationships with those that meant the most to him. They include legendary artists such as Pete Seger (Edward Norton), Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), and Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook), as and his girlfriend Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning), a fictionalized version of Dylan's real-life girlfriend, Suze Rotolo.
Chalamet, a huge Dylan fan, is inspired in the role, and even does all of his own singing. The star even showcased his talents by performing three songs as the musical guest (and host) on SNL last January, which must be seen to be believed.
