The issue I have is drives fail, and you have to manually manage everything. So the money spent buying new drives every couple years far out weights the benefit. The other issue is hard drives silently experience bit rot, so that is even more time spent verifying your photos aren't decaying.

For your monthly fee, google monitors and replaces hard drives, electricity, and etc as needed. This even more true when you cross the 60,000 photo mark.
